How to Optimize Your Business for ChatGPT
ChatGPT now answers tens of millions of buyer-intent queries every day, and a growing share of them are local: "find me a math tutor in Blythewood for my struggling 9th-grader," "best SAT prep in the Columbia area for a kid who wants 1450+," "is there a tutor near Lake Carolina who does ADHD-friendly study coaching?" Tutoring businesses cited in those answers are full to capacity by November of any given school year. The ones not cited are not.
This article is a concrete optimization checklist for ChatGPT visibility specifically, using a Blythewood-area tutoring service as the running example. Most of the recommendations apply to Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Claude as well — but ChatGPT has specific quirks worth optimizing for, and we will call those out.
The ChatGPT Index
2024
The year ChatGPT moved to general-availability web search, with live indexing of new pages and visible source citations. As of mid-2026, it is the single most-used AI assistant for U.S. consumer queries — and a growing share of local-business "recommend a ___" queries route to it first.
What ChatGPT Specifically Looks For
ChatGPT uses a combination of (a) its training-data corpus, (b) live web search via the search-tool integration, and (c) cross-references from Google Business Profile, Bing's local index, and trusted directories. The optimization implications:
- Long-tail web content matters more than for traditional Google. ChatGPT's search-tool retrieves on the fly and surfaces sites it had never indexed before, as long as they answer the question well.
- Bing local index matters. ChatGPT's web search is partially Bing-backed; a complete Bing Places listing helps where it would not for Google.
- OpenAI's crawler must not be blocked.
GPTBotandOAI-SearchBotin your robots.txt must be either explicitly allowed or not blocked. - Question-shaped content gets cited. The model is trained to look for direct answers; pages that answer questions explicitly get lifted into responses.
The core principle: ChatGPT rewards businesses whose public content answers specific questions clearly and whose entity data is consistent across both Google's and Bing's local indexes. Most optimization advice applies; the Bing-and-allow-the-crawler dimensions are ChatGPT-specific.
The 10-Step ChatGPT Optimization Checklist
Step 1: Verify GPTBot Has Access to Your Site
Open your robots.txt file. If you see:
User-agent: GPTBot— you are explicitly blocked from ChatGPT
Disallow: /User-agent: OAI-SearchBot— you are blocked from ChatGPT's live search
Disallow: /- No GPTBot or OAI-SearchBot entry — you are allowed (good)
If you're blocked, change to Allow: / or remove the block. Some site-builder platforms set this block by default; check yours.
Common mistake: Blocking AI crawlers in 2023-2024 over IP concerns and forgetting to revisit. The cost is invisibility in ChatGPT for as long as the block remains.
Time investment: 5 minutes to check, 5 minutes to fix.
Step 2: Strengthen Your Bing Places Listing
Most small businesses neglect Bing Places. For ChatGPT, that is a mistake. The complete Bing Places listing for a Blythewood tutoring service should include:
- Business name (matching Google exactly)
- Address (or "service area" if you tutor at the student's home)
- Phone and email
- Categories ("Tutoring service" + relevant secondary)
- Hours (typical evening / weekend schedule)
- Services list (subject areas, test prep, study coaching, executive function)
- Photos (workspace, founder, materials)
- Description (200-400 characters, specific)
Time investment: 30-45 minutes.
Step 3: Write Question-Shaped Service Pages
A tutoring service should have a service page for every real customer question. Examples:
- "How does in-home tutoring work in the Blythewood and Lake Carolina area?"
- "What does effective SAT prep look like for a student aiming at 1450+?"
- "How do tutors approach ADHD students who struggle with executive function?"
- "How many tutoring sessions does it typically take to see grade improvement?"
- "What does AP-Calculus tutoring cost in the Midlands, and what should you expect for the price?"
Each page should be 1,200-1,800 words. Use FAQPage schema on each one. ChatGPT lifts answers from FAQ-shaped pages preferentially.
Time investment: 4-6 hours per page. Plan one per month.
Step 4: Add Structured Data the AI Can Parse
The 2026 baseline for a tutoring service:
- EducationalOrganization or Service on the homepage
- Person on each tutor's bio page with
hasCredentialfor degrees and teaching certifications - Course on each specific tutoring offering (SAT prep, AP Calculus, AP Chemistry, etc.)
- FAQPage on every question-shaped page
- Review with
AggregateRatingon the homepage
Time investment: 3-4 hours initial setup.
Step 5: Build Authority Through Named Tutors
"Our team of qualified tutors" is invisible. "Maria Patel, Ph.D. in Mathematics from USC (2019), 8 years tutoring AP Calculus and SAT Math, specializing in students who struggle with word-problem translation" is citable.
Every tutor on your roster should have a bio page with credentials, subject specialties, years of experience, and a photo. ChatGPT lifts named-tutor language directly into recommendations.
Time investment: 30-45 minutes per tutor.

Run Your Free ChatGPT AuditStep 6: Get Reviews That Mention Specific Outcomes
For a tutoring service, the highest-signal reviews mention the subject, the tutor name, the duration of engagement, and a specific outcome. "Maria helped my son go from a C to a B+ in AP Calculus in eight weeks of one-hour Tuesday sessions" produces extractable signal. "Great tutoring service!!" produces none.
Rewrite your post-engagement review-request to prompt for those specifics. Most parents are happy to oblige if you give them the structure.
Time investment: 10 minutes.
Step 7: Stand Up a Real Booking / Inquiry Surface
A public "schedule a free 15-minute consultation" link on the homepage that an AI assistant can read. Calendly or Acuity is fine. The link should be discoverable in HTML, not buried inside a JavaScript modal.
Common mistake: Locking the inquiry form behind a multi-page contact flow. AI assistants prefer single-click bookable surfaces.
Time investment: 1-2 hours to wire up.
Step 8: Publish Hyperlocal Content
Articles that mention specific Blythewood schools, specific Lake Carolina neighborhood patterns, the catchment-area dynamics of the Richland County 2 school district, the typical pacing of AP and IB programs at the relevant high schools. National content doesn't compete in these queries.
Examples that work:
- "How AP Calculus is paced at Ridge View, Spring Valley, and Westwood — and where students typically need help"
- "What changes about SAT prep for Blythewood-area students who attend public vs. private schools"
- "How to evaluate a tutor in the Lake Carolina area when your student has been masking academic struggle"
Time investment: 4-6 hours per article. Plan one per month.
Step 9: Earn One Cross-Surface Mention Per Quarter
A guest spot on a parenting podcast, a quote in a Cola Daily article about back-to-school resources, a workshop at the Blythewood public library, a sponsored Richland County 2 PTA event with web coverage. These are the third-party signals ChatGPT weighs heavily.
Time investment: 3-4 hours per outreach. One per quarter is sufficient.
Step 10: Maintain Monthly Freshness
Google Business Profile post at least monthly. Update one service page per month with new examples or current data. Refresh your tutor bios at the start of each school year. ChatGPT down-weights businesses that look dormant.
Time investment: 30 minutes per month.
Why Blythewood tutoring is a specific opportunity: The Blythewood, Lake Carolina, and Killian-corridor demographic skews toward families with strong academic-investment patterns and strong AI-tool adoption among the parents. Most tutoring services in the area have made none of the optimizations above. The service that completes this 10-step checklist in the next 60 days typically becomes the named recommendation for the categories that matter — AP, SAT prep, executive function, ADHD support — for the rest of the school year and the year after.

Two patterns we see in tutoring engagements:
Pattern A: The tutoring service already ranks well on Google, has a complete GBP, and gets decent organic traffic. They are not in ChatGPT's answer set. Diagnosis: usually a robots.txt block on GPTBot, plus thin Bing Places, plus no FAQPage schema. Fix in 5-7 days. Citations start within 30 days.
Pattern B: The tutoring service has minimal online presence everywhere. They are not in ChatGPT's answer set OR Google's. Diagnosis: foundational work needed everywhere. Fix in 60-90 days. Citations start within 90-120 days but compound thereafter.
Most Blythewood-area services we see are Pattern A. The fix is fast.
The Bottom Line
ChatGPT optimization overlaps about 80% with general GEO, with three ChatGPT-specific quirks: GPTBot must be allowed in robots.txt, Bing Places matters more than for Google, and FAQ-shaped content gets cited preferentially. A Blythewood-area tutoring service that runs the 10-step checklist in 30 days will start appearing in ChatGPT recommendations within 60 days — well before the start of the next school-year tutoring cycle.
